In June 2022, the Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) released a research report edited by Ms Jessica Wa 'u, the Deputy Director of SIIA, which provides a comprehensive analysis of the latest development trends and policy challenges of ASEAN's digital economy. According to the report, due to the continuous impact of the global pandemic, ASEAN consumers have started to meet most of their consumption needs through e-commerce websites, which has promoted the rapid growth of e-commerce and courier services in the region, and the development of online trade has further contributed to the rise and development of online payment. The report also points out that rapid digitalization has also led to exponential growth in data and data centers, which consumes huge amounts of energy and causes a rapid increase in carbon emissions. With the global "digital divide" and "regulatory rift" growing, Singapore, as a key leader in ASEAN, has been pushing to address the gaps that exist within ASEAN and between ASEAN and its major trading partners, and to explore ways to harmonize the different digital regulatory models. The terms related to e-commerce of RCEP already in effect and the Singapore-led Digital Economy Partnership (DEPA) have both laid a good foundation for ASEAN, especially Singapore, to participate in the formation of global digital trade rules and promote the development of digital trade in the ASEAN region.
